Aptitude is very essential for the job aspirants and even for post graduation entrance. Testing one's aptitude gives a clear picture of the productivity of a candidate. That's why fresher's are evaluated with the aptitude skill before hiring them. In India, 99% of the private company tests aptitude of fresher candidate to decide his/her employability. Aptitude has got its place in GATE too. 15%, of marks will be usually from aptitude. For MBA entrance, CAT requires high aptitude to get good percentile. IPBO banking exams are also based on Aptitude. So it is recommended to have continuous practise and grip over aptitude.
Aptitude tests are the way of measuring one's basic skills. It evaluates one's communication, mathematical , logical and problem solving ability.
Aptitude test basically consists of the following three sections.
1 Quant's or quantitative aptitude.
This section involves basic maths questions. Starting from HCF LCM to Probability..
Below are the lists of basics that one should learn to be good in this section.
Number systems, Progressions, Averages, Alligations, Percentages, Pipes and systerins, Profit and Loss, simple interest and compound interest, Ration, proportion and variations, Time and Work, Time, Speed and distance, Geometry and mensuration, problems on train, Quadratic equations, Logarithms, Permutation and Combination, and at last Probability.
Preparing for this section is not that easy. One needs focus and continuous efforts. More you practise more perfect you will be in this section.
2. Logical Reasoning/ Problem solving
This section contains problems on ages, relationships, arrangements, data sufficiency, data interpretation. One needs a little practise and should think logically to solve this section.
3. English or Verbal ability
Yes, English is mandatory in aptitude test.
The basic types of questions are error correction, antonyms, synonyms, reading comprehension, article usage etc.

For CAT preparation, I recommend ARUN SHARMA'S BOOKS. They are good and updated with the latest cat questions. Testspot, m4maths, byjus, IIM2 are some of the online portals that provides updated cat questions.
For basic aptitude, I recommend R S agarwal for Quant's section. INDIABIX.com provides mock tests for all the three sections.
